September 22, 23 & 24, 2017 - Indian Summer Days Weekend Ride

Tour guided rides and equine games will be available during the weekend of Medicine Lodge's Peace Treaty Indian Summer Days event held this year from September 22 to 24, 2017.

Join us for the weekend and take advantage of our daily guided rides throughout 10,000 acres of the beautiful Gypsum Hills. We'll be riding over the same territory frequented by the Plains Indian Tribes involved in the 1867 Peace Treaty. You can still see old buffalo wallows in the pastures, and some are lucky enough to find old arrowheads still buried out in our hills!

  • Cost for camping and riding the ranch is $25 per person.

  • Outdoor pens are available for rent with advanced reservations. Pens are $20 per weekend, with a maximum of 2 equine per pen.

  • New in 2017: reserve The Pouting House, a rustic cabin with two queen beds located a short drive from the Gyp Hills campground. Learn more here

  • You must provide your own equine, tack, camping equipment, and meals for the weekend. We do not provide equine for rent.

Indian Summer Days in Medicine Lodge, Kansas

The annual weekend community event commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Medicine Lodge, signed in 1867 by the Peace Commission of the United States Government and the five tribes of Plains Indians, the Kiowa, the Comanche, the Kiowa-Apache, the Arapaho and the Cheyenne. While the Indian Summer Days does not include the full Peace Treaty reenactment, it does offer many of the other exciting activities.

  • Peace Treaty Powwow
    • Experience an authentic Native American powwow that offers a glimpse into the centuries-old tradition.  The powwow is open to the public and is an opportunity for you to learn about the tradition as Native Americans meet, dance, sing, socialize, and honor their Native American culture.
  • Kansas Championship Ranch Rodeo
    • Included in the weekend's festivities is the annual Kansas Championship Ranch Rodeo, a sanctioned rodeo by the Working Ranch Cowboy Association. The Rodeo will be held Friday and Saturday nights.
      • Featured Events include:
        • Ranch Bronc Riding
        • Calf Branding
        • Stray Gathering
        • Team Penning
        • Wild Cow Milking
        • 2 Go Rounds
  • Peace Treaty Historical Night Show
    • Downtown Medicine Lodge transforms into a frontier town in the 1880's, and the Night Show will re-enact the Main Street Bank Robbery and feature Carry Nation, the famous teetotaler who loved to smash saloons and anyplace that sold "Demon Rum"! Don't miss this fun and interactive night show in downtown Medicine Lodge.
